Massimo’s Pizza Club run by Massimo and Tracy Orione makes the best pizza in Cape Town by some distance. When we heard that this would be the last weekend it would be operating from its old premises in Hout Bay before re-opening in Spring at an as yet undisclosed new location, we rushed to make a booking.
The Oriones are relaxed about patrons bringing their own wine but inevitably we ran out. What to order from the winelist? Earlier in the evening, we’d been to the Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show public tasting at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, were I’d spotted the Barbera 2008 from Durbanville farm Altydgedacht proudly sporting a silver medal. I hadn’t had chance to taste it but thought its accolade was enough endorsement to justify ordering a bottle.
Instantly dubbed “Barbarella” by my non-wino mates, it proved delicious: plenty of up-front black cherry fruit followed by a pleasingly dry finish that only Italian varieties provide. You can buy it from the farm at R85 a bottle.
