8. What local wine category is most over-rated?

“We’ve killed the category with wood,”
said retailer Carrie Adams of Jo’burg retail
outfit Norman Goodfellows during last
year’s Chardonnay tasting. A gung-ho
approach to oaking in the past probably
also explains why so many of you say
unwooded Chardonnay is due for a revival
(see question 7, left). But increasingly deft
handling of wood should see Chardonnay
remaining the queen of white varieties.

Interesting that so many of you feel
Pinotage is overrated, considering how
emphatic you were about it being the
country’s signature grape variety in last
year’s poll
