Comte Stephan von Neipperg Consultant at Capaia Winery

A glass of WINE with Stephan von Neiperg

Bordeaux chateaux owner Comte Stephan von Neipperg is consultant at Capaia winery near Philadelphia and is only interested in making wines that will age well.

Why Capaia?
Here you find varying terroir in a concentrated area, making it easy to achieve harmony between concentration, balance, profoundness and quality of tannins.

What are your views on South African winemaking?
South Africa must find grapes suited to its climate, like Petit Verdot, Syrah, Cab Franc – but less Merlot.

What wines are getting it right?
I’ve tasted some wines around but not enough so really I can’t say. But I did taste an Adi Badenhorst Shiraz-blend that impressed.

Your views on the 2009 vintage?
This year is a great vintage, very similar to 2003. It has ripeness and extraction and will make wines that can go into the future.
