Serve with pizza, pasta or simply on its own.

After more than my fair share of haggis, salmon, Aberdeen Angus beef  and, yes, whisky while in Scotland courtesy of liquor marketing company Edward Snell and Co, some comfort food and drink was required upon my return to South Africa and so it was off to Massimo’s Italian restaurant and pizzeria in Hout Bay this past weekend.

On the plate, a pancetta pizza and in the glass, Secateurs Chenin Blanc 2013 from Badenhorst Family Wines, quite possibly the best vintage yet of this wine. Honeysuckle, white and yellow peach plus a hint of spice on the nose while the palate shows concentrated, succulent fruit and tangy acidity. Best of all, the wine cost R130 a bottle, the equivalent of about ₤7. A week before I’d been dining at the Radisson Blue Edwardian, Manchester where Kleine Zalze Vineyard Selection Chenin went for ₤24.75…

Score: 90/100.

Cracking wine – starting to make some waves in Australia with it. Stupidly good value.
