Sugar rush.

The Red Muscadel 2013 (R55 a bottle) from Rawsonville cellar Badsberg was named best Muscadel in South Africa at the 2014 Muskadel SA Awards earlier this year. Muscat de Frontignan comprises a mere 60 tonnes of the 28 000 tonnes grapes annually pressed by Badsberg and the grapes come from 14-year-old vines of a single property called Wysersdrif, situated approximately 5km from Badsberg en-route to Ceres.

It has a definite raisined quality about it but also notes of potpourri and spice. It’s a blockbuster (you get ‘em in every category) being sweet and thick textured on the palate. Abv: 15.5%, RS 252.4g/l, TA 5.1g/l and pH 3.52.

Score: 87/100.
