Black Elephant Vintners Brut MCC

Black beauty.

Black beauty.

Franschhoek producer Black Elephant Vintners has released its maiden vintage Brut MCC and it’s a fine effort. A blend of 75% Chardonnay and 25% Pinot Noir, it spent 12 months on its primary lees in tank before a further 20 months in bottle before disgorgement.

It shows citrus, peach and a subtle honey-on-toast quality. Rich but not too rich, it has soft but sufficient acidity and a fine, creamy mousse before a gently savoury finish. Balanced and sophisticated. Price: R220 a bottle.

Score: 90/100.
