Some new kit from Francois Haabroek, previously of Waterford in Stellenbosch, who sources grapes from across the Western Cape for his own Blackwater label:

Blackwater Sauvignon Blanc 2013
Approximate retail price:  R83
W.O. Darling. A charming wine showing delicate notes of lime, green apple and cantaloupe plus some herbal nuance in the background. Pure and unadorned with gentle acidity – great drinkability by virtue of an abv of just 12%.

Score: 87/100.

Blackwater Noir 2012
Aproximate retail price: R155
W.O. Swartland. 93% Syrah, rest Carignan and Grenache.  20% whole bunch ferment and matured in old 500-litre and 600-litre barrels for 24 to 30 months. Very expressive on the nose with notes of dark berries, violets, earth and spice. Great fruit concentration, bright acidity, nicely ripe tannins and no oak influence to speak of.

Score: 90/100.
