BLANKBottle 3rd Round 2015

Step by step.

Pieter Walser of BLANKBottle prides himself on offbeat names for his wines, “3rd Round” in this instance referring to the corresponding stage of his business journey with retailer Woolworths (see here).

It’s a modest but immensely likeable blend of Carignan, Mourvèdre and Syrah from the Swartland plus Cinsault from Darling (some whole-bunch fermentation, maturation lasting 18 months in old oak, abv 14%). The nose shows wild strawberry, fynbos and spice while the palate is fruity and fresh with relatively soft tannins, the finish still managing to be gently savoury. Woolworths price: R99.97 a bottle.

Editor’s rating: 88/100.
