Today is the tasting for the Sanlam Cabernet Sauvignon Report 2014 (previously the Christian Eedes Cabernet Sauvignon Report presented by Sanlam Private Investments) and by way of calibration, a bottle of Boekenhoutskloof Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 (rated 5 Stars in the 2011 edition of Platter’s) with dinner last night.
Matured for 27 months in 100% new French oak and with an abv of 14.89%, it proved decadent drinking. Lots going on with notes of red and black fruit, tobacco and chocolate – more cocoa powder than Cadbury Dairy Milk. Extremely flavourful, well balanced and long – tannins expertly managed and the overall impression savoury rather than sweet. The first signs of development are also evident and I would say the wine is pretty much good to go.
