“Ultra-premium” evidently means something different in Calitzdorp than it does in Stellenbosch – Boplaas is pitching its new Touriga Nacional Shiraz blend called Gamka (meaning “lion” and also the name of a local river) and as such but asks a very modest R80 a bottle for it.

It combines 42% Calitzdorp grapes with 42% Stellenbosch and 16% Wellington and total production amounted to just 3 400 bottles. It’s exotic and boisterous showing ultra-ripe dark fruit and spice, sweet upfront but this offset by fresh acidity and good tannic grip. We liked it a lot but would advise that should best be attempted in the dead of winter paired with something like a tomato bredie…

    Good day Christian, thanks for the mention. I am glad you like the wine. Just to clarify the GAMKA is R175 from the cellar. A bit more than you mentioned. It is available for tasting at the Boplaas tasting room in Calitzdorp and Cool Bay tasting room in Klein Brak river.
