Two comforting drops for a cold winter’s night from Boplaas in Calitzdorp:

Boplaas The 1932 Block Hanepoot 2015

Octogenarian.

Boplaas The 1932 Block Hanepoot 2015
Price: R150 per 500ml bottle

From an old block planted on the banks of the Gamka River. Citrus, saltana, a certain waxiness  and spice on the nose. Rich and thick textured. Well balanced with nicely coated acidity and the finish not too fiery.

Editor’s rating: 90/100.

Boplaas Ouma Cloete Straw Wine 2015
Price: R110 per 500ml bottle

From Muscat de Frontignan and Viognier, pinched and allowed to dry on the vine.  A top note of potpourri before cut apple, peach and a little honey. Rich and full with good depth of flavour and nicely coated acidity. Not as cloying as some in this style.

Editor’s rating: 89/100.
