A more than passable imitation.

After a line-up of 10 examples of Bordeaux from the 2008 vintage earlier in the evening see here), a bottle of Christine 2008, the Bordeaux-style red blend from Constantia property Buitenverwachting. Just to calibrate.

A blend of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Cabernet Franc and 10% Merlot, it showed concentrated dark fruit, fresh acidity and firm, grippy tannins. What set it apart from the wines of Bordeaux was more fruit weight and overall heft but it was still serious and demanding, perhaps the defining character being its very long, dry finish (score: 17/20). At R250 a bottle, you need never shop outside of South Africa, but how boring would that be?
