“Rather a year too early than a day too late” goes the aphorism about when to drink a wine and after a recent bottle of 2010 Hussyes Vlei from Buitenverwachting appeared ever so slightly tired (see here), I yesterday opened a bottle of the 2011.
While the 2010 had an abv of 13.5% on the back label, that of the 2011 was 13% and it was that little bit tighter and more refined. The predominant flavour was lime but also some subtle and hence not unattractive herbal and asparagus notes. Pure and focused, possessing good palate weight but thankfully short of oily, well balanced on the whole. We’d clobbered it before the lunch guests had even arrived which is precisely the point of good Sauvignon.
