Is there any more capricious human endeavour than farming? Buitenverwachting Husseys Vlei Sauvignon Blanc 2013 from Buitenverwachting is rated 5 Stars in the latest edition of Platter’s and as we sat drinking a bottle last night, news came through that a fire had destroyed the Constantia property’s workshop (see here).

The wine is a stonker. The nose shows lime, white peach, some dustiness as well as a hint of not unpleasant reduction. The palate is lean with fresh acidity, and served cold, appears quite severe. With time in the glass, it gains more dimension with a little granadilla becoming evident. Pure and precise, it should age beautifully. Wine Cellar price: R115 a bottle.

Score: 93/100.
