Part of the non-aligned movement.

Predictably it’s Moët being drunk at Mangaung (see here) but there’s some smart new Cap Classique around for those of us less well connected.

Charles Fox Brut 2010: 16.5/20
Approximate retail price: R215
40% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Noir, 20% Pinot Meunier. 24 months on the lees. From a new Elgin producer, this shows citrus and green apple plus a subtle and entirely pleasant aldehydic character. Very fine, creamy mousse and tangy acidity. Carefully assembled.

Plaisir de Merle Grand Brut 2010: 16/20
Price: R145
63% Pinot Noir from Stellenbosch, 37% Chardonnay from Paarl. 24 months on the lees. A light and pretty bubbly with a very fine mousse and well integrated acidity. Flavours of apple, pear and white peach – surprisingly little red fruit character.

Longridge Brut 2008: 16/20
Price: R105
82% Chardonnay from Stellenbosch, 18% Pinot Noir from Elgin. 42 months on the lees. Very vigorous mousse. Overtly yeasty on the nose. Rich and creamy with pronounced honey note, soft acidity.
