Chateau Libertas Limited Edition 2010

Rearguard action.Unsubstantiated rumours that Chateau Libertas is on the way out, with no new following in the emerging market segment prior or subsequent to its recent make-over (see here).

To commemorate the wine’s 80th anniversary, a Limited Edition bottling (only 4 000 bottles). “The best of the best,” Bonny van Niekerk is supposed to have said of this according to the official media release and it features Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Shiraz from vineyards in both Stellenbosch and Darling.

It’s light bodied with red fruit, good freshness and just a bit of tannic grip. Balanced, dry, unassuming. Precisely what you want modern-day Chateau Libertas to be (my score: 15/20). Thing is, it has a recommended retail price of R65 whereas the standard bottling (a gazillion litres?) is under R40 a bottle but crucially a notch down in quality, if only just. C’mon Distell, raise the price if you must, but raise your game accordingly.

Hi Elias, I’m flattered that anyone would want my take on Bordeaux, Burgundy or any other foreign wine region but I’m inclined to leave that to Bob, Jancis and co. They’re the generalists, I’m an SA specialist ;-)

Hi Christian… thanks for your lovely blog, one of the more honest ones out there. Is it possible to post more international wines on the site, maybe some wine that are available in SA etc. Most of our local critics taste enough international wines but never post their experiences.
