Whenever I find myself shopping at Checkers I always wonder how good a bargain the own-label Odd Bins wines really are – these are supposedly limited quantity bottlings from “famous” wine farms sold at discount prices.

Checkers is currently particularly proud of its Odd Bins Bin 239 Sauvignon Blanc 2013 and Odd Bins Bin 242 Sauvignon Blanc 2013, both of which Grand d’Or medals at this year’s Michelangelo International Wine Awards. Samples were arranged and unfortunately I wasn’t overly impressed.

Odd Bins Bin 239 Sauvignon Blanc 2013
Price: R39.99
Green melon and some leesy character. Rich, ripe and thick textured. Moderate acidity to the point of listless. Lacks focus and not particularly distinguished.

Granadilla and pineapple upfront, some pyrazine bite on the finish. Good concentration and freshness – nice enough summer quaffing.
