Clos Malverne Spirit of Malverne 2011

Collector's item.

Collector’s item.

The Spirit of Malverne from Clos Malverne from the Devon Valley ward in Stellenbosch is a limited release “Cape Blend” – it’s made up of 50% Pinotage, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon and 17% Shiraz and spent 18 months in oak, 80% French and 20% American, all new. The wine sells for R280 and only 500 bottles were made.

It’s a serious proposition, quite hard work to drink now but too young by some two or three years. The flavour spectrum is suitably wide given the three different varieties involved – plums, cranberry and cassis plus plenty of oak-derived vanilla and spice. Good concentration with moderate acidity and a fairly thick texture although, in fairness, not massively over-extracted. Not a bad investment especially if you still believe that the “Cape Blend” is an interesting concept.

Score: 89/100.
