Constantia Uitsig Semillon Reserve 2003

Fruit of our loins Zoë turns one on Friday 11 June – what other baby has her own birthday countdown clock? With her in the safekeeping of granny last night, her mum and I snuck off for drinks at Caveau at the Mill in Newlands.

A blackboard advertised “Vintage Wines at Vintage Prices” including Constantia Uitsig Semillon Reserve 2004 at R145 a bottle. Semillon is a variety that ages well and Constantia Uitsig is the source of a very fine example – the 2002 won John Loubser the title of Diners Club Winemaker of the Year in 2003 – so I didn’t hesitate to order a bottle.

When the waiter presented our selection, it turned out to be the 2003 – he didn’t seem to think it was too much of a problem and I wasn’t going to complain as ‘03 was generally a superb vintage. Nevertheless, local wine service could be so much better…

The wine proved excellent drinking , not at all over-developed with great palate weight and an acidity that had integrated beautifully. Upon release, it cost R90 a bottle from the farm. What a treat to be able to drink it seven years after vintage at a price not even twice what it originally sold for.
