De Grendel Elim Shiraz 2016

The bomb.

Yesterday’s Shiraz SA Challenge 2018 awards function was preceded by a tasting of the 25 “finalists” – the top 25 wines out 156 entries from which the winning 12 were chosen. My favourites were as follows:

De Grendel Elim Shiraz 2016 – 92/100
Loyalty club exclusive.
Bottled in magnum. Red and black berries, fynbos, white pepper and a hint of smoke on the nose. Pure fruit, fresh acidity and ever-so-fine tannins making for a long, dry finish. Very well balanced and oh, so more-ish. Alcohol: 14%.

Rust en Vrede Estate Vineyards Syrah 2015 – 92/100
Approximate retail price: R270
A very expressive nose displaying red and black fruit plus herbs, spice and pepper. Excellent fruit density, well integrated acidity and smooth tannins, the extraction very well handled. Very flavourful and beautifully balanced for what is a big wine. Alcohol: 14.68%.

Bloemendal Tierberg Syrah 2013 – 91/100
Eagles’ Nest 2015 – 91/100
Fairview Eenzaamheid 2014 – 91/100
Alto 2016 – 90/100
Ernie Els Proprietor’s Syrah 2015 – 90/100
Saronsberg 2016 – 90/100
Saronsberg Provenance 2016 – 90/100
Stark-Condé Three Pines Syrah 2015 – 90/100
