No mess, no fuss.

De Grendel Shiraz is a wine that should be on every pizzeria wine list around the country. I’ve liked it ever since the 2010 got gold at the Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show in 2012 and the 2013 doesn’t disappoint.

It’s a combination of pretty much equal parts Durbanville, Paarl and Stellenbosch grapes and it spent 12 months in 80% French and 20% American oak, about 25% new.

It shows red and black fruit, some not unpleasant reduction and stacks of herbal notes – rosemary in particular. The palate is fairly bursting with fruit and has a nice freshness about it while the tannins are soft but not slippery making it very approachable. Great quality relative to price at R125 a bottle.
