The Shiraz as made by Durbanville cellar De Grendel has always been immensely appealing (see here) although I think the 2015 vintage was a bit lucky to win double gold at this year’s Veritas Awards.
From a combination of Paarl and Stellenbosch fruit, the wine was matured for 13 months in 10% new American oak, 10% new French oak and the rest second- and third-fill barrels. On the nose, a hint of purple flowers before red fruit, coriander seed and other spice plus a hint of reduction. The palate is rich with plenty of sweet fruit, tangy acidity and relatively soft tannins. As ever, very approachable but perhaps a bit short of intricacy. Price: R135 a bottle.
