Rock 'n roll.

So much to like about Debutant 2003 from De Kleine Wijn Koöp. Firstly, the gritty packaging designed by Fanakalo, the Stellenbosch graphic designers also responsible for Boer & Brit and Sequillo among others.

Secondly, the wine itself. Wine of origin Swartland, the all-Afrikaans De Kleine Wijn Koöp website describes it as consisting of a “mengelmoes” of varieties and had me thinking of something from the  Southern Rhône. No indication of who made the wine but all part of the mystique. Total production a mere 600 bottles and asking price is R150 a bottle.

It’s amazingly fresh for a 2003 vintage wine. Very aromatic on the nose: red fruit, dried herbs, spice and some earthiness all in evidence. The palate is medium bodied and well balanced with sweet red fruit upfront before a savoury, slightly salty finish. I thought it was charming and scored it 16/20.
