All conquering.

All conquering.

The Cape Vintage Reserve Port 2008 from Calitzdorp producer De Krans comes festooned with stickers including one announcing its 5-Star rating in the 2011 edition of Platter’s.

Of course, it shouldn’t be broached for a long while yet, but another Stormers defeat by the Crusaders demanded some succour. A blend of 60% Touriga Nacional, 35% Tinta Barocca, 5% Souzão, it’s a blockbuster.

Dark fruit, fynbos, spice and chocolate on the nose. The palate is rich but balanced – plenty of pure fruit, great freshness, smooth tannins.  Certainly impressive but I was left wanting just a little more intricacy and detail – whether this will come with time, remains to be seen.

Score: 92/100.
