David Thompson and partners bought a farm outside Riebeek Kasteel in 1996 and son Dean now makes wine from these vineyards under the 2 mile² label. The Syrah 2011 (total production 3 500 bottles, R121 from Vino Pronto in Gardens) underwent spontaneous fermentation and was matured in second- and third-fill barrels for around 18 months.

It’s typical Swartland stuff being rich and concentrated. Red and black fruit, a touch of earthiness, pepper and spice. Fresh acidity prevents it from becoming overbearing and there’s a nice comforting quality about it. Score: 16/20.
