Wednesday was one of those crazy days that life in the wine industry occasionally throws you: In the morning, a line-up of 51 unwooded examples of Chenin Blanc for Veritas. In the evening, the launch of Celebrating Méthode Cape Classique, Di Kruger’s new book on bubbly at Simonsig and the chance to sample the wares of many of the producers featured in the book – the Villiera Monro 2006 particularly fine.
After all this, a fortifying meal was needed and my wife Jane and I headed to that great purveyor of Italian food, Magica Roma in Pineland. This led to a chance meeting with Cathy Marshall of Catherine Marshall Wines, Caroline Rillema of boutique wine stores Caroline’s Fine Wine and Tracy van Maaren, owner of agency TvM Wines.
We’d intended a pretty low-key evening but Marshall, Rilemma and Van Maaren had other ideas and we were soon partaking of the likes of Sequillo White 2010, Sequillo Red 2009, Aldo Conterno Barolo 1999, Ornellaia 2004 and Paolo Scavino Cannubi 2006. Wine of the evening, however, was Didier Dagueneau Pur Sang Blanc Fumé De Pouilly 2007. Perfumed on the nose, before intense lime and grapefruit on the palate and a line of acidity that was almost electrifying. Great with a starter combo of parma ham and melon as well as grilled calamari with garlic and chilli…
