Lunch yesterday with Nico Grobler of Stellenbosch property Eikendal to have a look at the newly released 2012 vintage of his Bordeaux-style red blend called Classique (R205 a bottle).
This is a wine gaining in reputation all the time with the 2009 vintage judged not only best in class but best red wine overall at the 2012 Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show while the 2011 is rated 5 Stars in the current edition of Platter’s.
“I’m looking for mature fruit combined with elegance – the first is achieved in the vineyard and the second in the cellar,” says Grobler.
The 2012 is a blend of 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot and 12% Cabernet Franc which was matured for 18 months in 300-litre French oak barrels, 45% new. It shows black fruit, attractive oak spice and a tea leaf sort of fragrance. There’s good concentration, fresh acidity and fine tannins – it’s seamlessly put together, which is becoming a Grobler hallmark, but perhaps just a little more ripe and plush than 2011.
