Cosmetically enhanced.

Sex symbol.

It seems fair to say that Ernie Els Signature was always intended to be a cult wine with it named after a top professional golfer, positioned at the very top of the local market and made in a powerful, weighty style.

Does it work? Over the weekend, the 2007 which was rated 5 Stars in Platter’s 2011. A blend of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 5% Malbec, it was aged for 18 months in 300-litre French barrels, 100% new. Alcohol by volume 15% unashamedly stated on the back label.

A lovely nose – initially dark fruit, oak spice and a subtle forest floor note but also some red fruit and attractive crushed herbs with time in the glass. The palate, meanwhile, displayed huge intensity with the tannins still remarkably firm and forceful.

It certainly didn’t fail to impress but on finishing the bottle, it felt a little bit like how I imagine shagging Pamela Anderson might be – you’d want to relate the experience, but not necessarily live through it again.

Score: 89/100.

    Like shagging Pamela Anderson?

Aged poorly, supported only by serious chemical intervention. A long bitter and wobbly finish, marked by regret and shame. As one would think, far better in youth.
