Fable Lion’s Whisker 2009

Roars with flavour?

I think I’m in a minority of one but I really like the packaging for the Fable wines – not a homestead or heraldic crest in sight. Yes, it’s “African” but done with a little bit of flair. Anyway, the Lion’s Whisker 2009 is 79% Syrah and 21% Mourvèdre (R175 a bottle). Lovely nose of fynbos, red and black fruit and spice. The palate however is very concentrated doesn’t quite deliver on the promise of the aromatics being very concentrated and dense and lacking a little freshness (abv is 14.5%). It’s an interesting rather than great wine. Score: 16.5/20.
