Fairview Stok by Paaltjie Grenache 2014

In vogue.

Whatever you might say about Fairview, Charles Back’s operation in Paarl, you can’t criticize the range for being conservative. Just as Grenache starts to trend, along comes this farm’s version, the name referencing the trellising system which sees each vine supported by its own pole.

Fermented in open-top foudre before being basket pressed, the wine was matured for 15 months in older French oak. Aromas of cherry, strawberry, earth and spice while the palate displays plenty of juicy fruit before a gently savoury finish. Very likeable but perhaps lacking a bit of depth and detail. Price: R285 a bottle.

Editor’s rating: 88/100.
