Good with seafood.

Good with seafood.

Verdelho is most closely associated with the Portuguese island of Madeira where the vineyards produce small, hard grapes and musts high in acidity.

Rare in the Cape, the 2009 from Bot River producer Feiteiras in Elgin famously won the trophy for best niche white variety at the 2010 Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show and the wine savvy Lidia Nobrega of Chapmans Peak Hotel waisted no time listing it as a good accompaniment to her Portuguese fare.

The restaurant currently sells the 2010 at R150 a bottle – grape-y upfront before a really pithy finish. Hardly profound but it worked gangbusters with the hotel’s signature fried calamari.

Score: 85/100.
