Franki’s Vineyards Grenache 2012

Good to go.

Franki’s Vineyards is a 700ha property situated between Malmesbury and Darling. In addition to plantings of Grenache, Mourvèdre and Viognier amounting to some 22ha, you’ll also find South Africa’s first solar photovoltaic farm. Entrepreneur Anthony Corin leads the company behind the alternative energy initiative and it’s his partner Erica Joubert who makes the wine.

The Grenache 2012 (R80 a bottle) is the pick of the current-release wines, being modest but entirely likeable. Matured for 12 months in older oak, the nose shows red fruit, earth, spice and a little fynbos. It’s medium bodied and already quite mellow, not without freshness but no tannic grip to speak of. A quaffer in the best sense.

#WinemagRating: 88/100.
