How does a relatively new winery establish its brand in an over-traded market? Last night Glenelly screened a short film called “Glass” exploring the similarities between glass and wine made by local video production company August (watch it here).
The film was whimsical, the wines were more serious. In particular, I liked the Glass Collection Syrah 2010 (R75 a bottle) which I thought showed good concentration, well-judged oak and nice freshness – red and black fruit plus plenty of pepper. Understated, as winemaker Luke O’Cuinnegan’s wines generally are, but not without personality. Score: 88/100.
The one wine from Glenelly that certainly doesn’t lack for ambition is Lady May, the 2010 a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Petit Verdot, matured for 24 months in French oak, 100% new and selling for R255 a bottle.
When it appeared in the line-up for my Cabernet Sauvignon Report last year, the feeling was that it was a bit overdone but some 10 months on, it’s looking more composed – great concentration, fresh acidity and smooth rather than slippery tannins. Plenty of dark fruit and attractive oak-derived notes. Score: 91/100.
