GlenWood Grand Duc Noblesse NV

Potent potion.

The Grand Duc Noblesse NV from GlenWood outside Franschhoek is a wine modelled on Sauternes. From Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc, extensive effort was made to ensure that only botrytis-infected grapes were used, fermentation occurring spontaneously before maturation in 225-litre French oak barrels, 100% new. Non-vintage, it incorporates both the 2013 and 2014 harvests.

On the nose, orange and apricot plus honey and a hint of mushroom. The palate has both breadth and depth –huge fruit concentration offset by tangy acidity before a savoury finish. Great with duck liver paté. Price: R220 per 375ml bottle.

#WinemagRating: 91/100.
