Rustic.

What to make of Goats do Roam Red 2011. It’s R45 a bottle from the Fairview tasting room, so on price alone, you’d expect an unpretentious quaffer. It’s a six-way blend, however, so you might hope for some complexity (61% Syrah for freshnes, 16% Cinsaut for softness, 12% Mourvèdre for spice, 5% Grenache for fruit, 4% Carignan for freshness and 2% Durif for texture according to the back label). In the end, I found the wine somewhat disappointing – very ripe dark fruit and coarse tannins. Rather crude overall. Score: 14.5/20.
