Today the unveiling of a bottle of Grand Constance 1821 by Dr Ernest Messina, chairman of the board of the Groot Constantia Trust, the item recently acquired when auctioned online by Catawiki for the amount of $1 717 (equivalent to R24 677). It’s set to be the centre-piece at the Cloete Cellar, which is currently under renovation and will become the property’s showpiece visitors’ centre.
At the same event, 12 bottles of Grand Constance 2009 were packed into the walls of the cellar to be opened in 2 February 2109 when the South African wine industry will be celebrate 450 years of existence.
At lunch, a chance to taste the 2013 vintage. A blend of red and white Muscat de Frontignan, the wine was matured in barrel for 26 months. The nose shows a floral top note before hints of apricot, blue gum honey and spice. It comes across as rich and broad – sweet and very thick textured, flavourful but perhaps a little short on the finish. Price: R516 per 375ml bottle.
