Pure as the driven snow.

Pure as the driven snow.

Johan Meyer makes some cool Swartland stuff on behalf of others but when it comes to his own wines, he uses Elgin Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Current releases reviewed below:

JH Meyer Signature Wines Chardonnay 2013
Price: R145

A third whole-bunch fermented, matured for 10 months in fourth-fill 500-litre barrels. Citrus on the nose and palate – great fruit expression and lovely bright acidity. Strikingly pure and unadulterated.

Score: 90/100.

JH Meyer Signature Wines Pinot Noir 2013
Price: R185
100% whole-bunch fermented, matured for eight months in old 300-litre barrels and four months in tank. Dark cherry, a touch of earth and scrub. Slightly more fruit weight than 2012 but hardly powerful. Not without redeeming features but ultimately a bit awkward.

Score: 86/100.
