Joostenberg Small Batch Collection new releases

Egghead wines.

Joostenberg in Paarl have been making some compelling experimental wines under the designation “Small Batch Collection” for a while now, the stand-out wines among the current releases as follows:

Joostenberg Small Batch Collection Kaalgat Steen 2016
Price: R148
From a 34-year-old Chenin Blanc vineyard. Fermented on the skins for five days and no sulphur added. Deep orange in colour. A somewhat shy nose with hints of floral perfume, ginger and other spice plus a little earthiness. The palate is light but flavourful (orange and apricot) with fresh acidity and an intensely pithy finish. Alc: 11.3%. Super geeky.

Editor’s rating: 89/100.

Joostenberg Small Batch Collection Mourvèdre 2016
Price: R148
“Dark, brooding, meaty and a bit wild” reads the label but this is a rather lovely version of the variety. Matured for 18 months in old oak. Red and black fruit, fynbos and flowers plus a little pepper on the nose. Medium bodied and well balanced – good fruit concentration, fresh acidity and gently grippy tannins. Alc: 13.5%.

Editor’s rating: 90/100.
