Small but perfectly formed.

Small but perfectly formed.

When Joostenberg winemaker Tyrrel Myburgh decided to put a barrel of Touriga Nacional from the 2013 vintage under the “Small Batch Collection” label on the basis that it was too interesting to blend away, he showed good judgement.

Quite the most enticing nose – red and black cherry, a pronounced floral note plus a little smokiness adding intrigue. Touriga is famous as a Port variety and often makes extremely concentrated, tannic table wines but this offering is medium bodied and very approachable – alcohol by volume is only 13% , the acidity fresh and the tannins fine.  A bargain at R120 a bottle from Joostenberg deli.

Score: 91/100.
