Lekker suip wines.

Lekker suip wines.

Just back from the launch of Wine magazine’s Best Value Wine Guide 2011 sponsored by Ultra Liquors. Joint best value cellars of the year are Distell (the Graça and Obikwa brands performing particularly well this time around) and Orange River Wine Cellars, Du Toitskloof having taken the honours for 2010 and Koelenhof in 2009.

Wines I particularly enjoyed with lunch were Arabella Viognier 2010 at R34 a bottle from the farm which I thought had typical peach aromatics and flavour without being at all overblown and Koelenbosch Sangiovese 2009 at R28.50, a complete knock-out at the price: dark cherry fruit, firm tannins and fresh acidity. It would put a lot of entry-level Chianti to shame.

Free copy of the guide available with the November issue of Wine magazine on sale from 25 October. For more details, see here.
