Le Sueuer Wines Chenin Blanc 2015

Surprise package.

Louis Le Sueur van der Riet, winemaker by day at Calitzdorp cellar De Krans, also makes an own label Chenin Blanc.

“My aim is to show that the Klein Karoo can produce good quality, interesting wines and not just Port,” he says and quite charming the current-release 2015 is, too.

From Calitzdorp fruit, vinification involved spontaneous fermentation and maturation lasting 10 months in old 300-litre barrels. Total production: 1 112 bottles.

The wine shows pear and white peach plus a pretty note of dried herbs on the nose. The palate meanwhile is pure and fresh with a pithy finish. It shows restraint and composure and along with Patatsfontein from Montagu, suggests we are only starting to understand what our less celebrated areas are truly capable of. Price: R120 a bottle.

#WinemagRating: 91/100.
