Lismore Chardonnay 2012

50 Shades of Greyton.

50 Shades of Greyton.

Farming on the slopes of the Riviersonderend mountains outside Greyton, Samantha O’Keefe has been making a name for herself with her Viognier but her Chardonnay 2012 is right up there, too.

Matured in a combination of 225-litre and 300-litre barrels for 11 months, the wine shows citrus, oatmeal, some leesy complexity and a touch of spice on the finish. Great fruit definition – really pure – and lovely bright acidity. Price: R180 a bottle.

Score: 93/100.

The Viognier 2013 is very good but perhaps a shade off the stellar 2012. Neutral on the nose, it shows stone fruit and spice on the palate. It’s pleasantly rich and broad while zippy acidity lends balance. Price: R200 a bottle.

Score: 91/100.

Both vintages by far the best Viogniers in SA in my opinion
