Maison is the Franschhoek property owned by Chris Weylandt and Kim Smith, founders of furniture and homeware retail chain Weylandts. Vineyards were established in 2005 and Antwan Bondesio is winemaker. Current releases include a single vineyard Chenin Blanc 2014 and a Shiraz 2011 – tasting notes and ratings below.

Maison Chenin Blanc 2014
Price: R120

From a 1.14ha block and tank fermented. The nose shows a honeysuckle top note before lemon and pineapple and a little yeasty complexity. Plenty of ripe fruit and thick in texture – quite curious to encounter such a rich unwooded example. Moderate yet tangy acidity.

#WinemagRating: 89/100.

Maison Shiraz 2011

Lifestyle accoutrement.

Maison Shiraz 2011
Price: R250

Matured for 12 months in 228-litre French oak, 30% new. Red and black fruit, intense pepper plus a little vanilla and some smokiness. Full but balanced with fresh acidity and smooth tannins. Contemporary but not too modern like the furniture.

#WinemagRating: 89/100.
