Marianne Sauvignon Blanc 2016

Buxom.

Blanc Fumé (wooded Sauvignon Blanc) is enjoying something of a resurgence, one of the cellars who are pursuing this style being Marianne in Stellenbosch. The 2015 was impressive (see here) and the 2016 is again on the money, winning gold at this year’s Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show.

Including 8% Semillon, it was fermented and matured for nine months in French oak, 50% new. The nose shows elder flower, yellow peach, naartjie and grapefruit. The palate is rich and broad with coated acidity and a savoury, almost salty finish. Welcome relief from the lean and green versions of the variety out there. Price: R170 a bottle.

Editor’s rating: 91/100.
