Mullineux Syrah 2013

Late bloomer?

Late bloomer?

The new-wave Syrahs from the Swartland seem particularly changeable in the bottle and perhaps I will come to love the 2013 vintage from Mullineux but I’m a bit underwhelmed by it at the moment.

The nose is pretty enough with notes of purple flowers and white pepper but the palate does not provide quite the same thrill as previous vintages being sweet fruited with moderate acidity and soft, powdery tannins. Some of its contemporaries are too wild but I wondered if this was wild enough? Wine Cellar price: R270 a bottle.

Score: 90/100.
