Nederburg II Centuries Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

OTT.

What style of South African Cabernet Sauvignon should be celebrated going forwards? The 2013 vintage of Nederburg II Centuries Cabernet Sauvignon recently received the Warren Winiarski Trophy for best in category at this year’s International Wine & Spirit Competition but did not fare as well in the Prescient Cabernet Sauvignon Report released earlier in the year where it rated 86 points.

Grapes come from Paarl and the wine spent 30 months in new, second- and third-fill 300-litre barrels. The alcohol is 14.79% and the RS is 3.1% and, as you may guess, it’s a bit of a bruiser. My tasting note on originally tasting it: “Ultra-ripe fruit on nose and palate. Heavily extracted. Sweet on entry, drying on finish – very difficult to drink.” Revisiting it now, I’m not much inclined to change my opinion and suffice to say, I think we should seek to reward wines of greater elegance. The price, for the record, is R380 a bottle.

Hi Kwispedoor, I wouldn’t be in too much of a hurry to get rid of that 2007. It’s an open secret that the grapes come from Plaisir de Merle and when Nederburg gets it right, then the result is something seriously age-worthy.

I’ll probably keep two bottles, Christian, but I have tasted too much bottle-variation regarding a particular issue (not one that all tasters are bothered by) as the wine has matured to be confident in it. That’s about as much as I’ll say about that on a public forum as I don’t like to be too negative – and I have to say that I have had a really good bottle as well.

It’s interesting to note, especially in these days of curious pricing decisions for brand new wines on the market, that the price for this wine has come down during the last six years (https://winemag.co.za/nederburg-ii-centuries-cabernet-sauvignon-2007-2/).

I’ve got some well-stored Nederburg II Centuries Cab 2007 – a vintage much better received by you – to trade for some drinkable, honest and tasty wines costing about half that price (red or white) if anyone’s interested.
