Winner.

The Shiraz 2008 from Neil Ellis Wines with truffle scrambled eggs on toast while watching Team SA’s Cameron Van Der Burgh not only win gold but break the world record in 100-meter breaststroke at the London Olympics on television last night reminded me why Shiraz is my default red wine.

Made from Elgin fruit, it spent 14 months in 500-litre French oak of which 25% was new. Not the most complex wine ever, it nevertheless impressed with its integrity –unadulterated red and black fruit, fresh acidity, fine tannins. My score was 16/20 and I would have had a grin on my face even Van der Burgh hadn’t won.

Er, no. Did see Australia’s women’s waterpolo team beat Italy, however. As filthy as Aussie wines are clean.

What a swim. Just smashed it on that first lap. Did you stay up for the hockey? :))
