Robertson Winery Shiraz won Best Red Box Wine

The third annual Spit or Swallow Box Wine Awards was held at Mercury Live in Cape Town this year. With a 70’s style Freddie Mercury theme, the fun was set before the 33 box wines were tasted.

Over 100 guests attended the event which meant over 100 judges. Yes, every person attending was a judge and scores were counted via Twitter. This makes the Box Wine Awards a unique wine event, showcasing the often frowned-upon South African box wines and incorporating a lively, interactive atmosphere around box wines.

Du Toitskloof Chenin Blanc won Best White Box Wine

Du Toitskloof’s Chenin Blanc was awarded the Best White Box Wine and Robertson Winery Shiraz was awarded the Best Red Box Wine. The panel of Freddie Mercury look-a-like judges included everyday wine drinkers to wine connoisseurs who set out to choose the best red and white box wines. The selection process included a blind tasting where participants tweeted their scores out of ten.

This year, with Freddie Mercury look-a-likes, glam rock outfits and big wigs, the annual Box Wine Awards could be fittingly sung out with “We are the champions.”
