I was given cause to reassess the role Tinta Barocca might play in the local context when it was revealed that it was part of an outstanding bottle of Zonnebloem Cabernet Sauvignon 1974 drunk earlier in the year (see here).

Eben Sadie makes his Old Vine Series Treinspoor entirely from Tinta planted in 1974 and the 2013 is worth seeking out.

Dark fruit, spice, scrub and earth on the nose and palate. Broad but not heavy with gentle acidity. So drinkable on account of not being over-ripe or over-extracted. Only 13% abv and you have a sense that Sadie really is bottling the vineyard and nothing else. Wine Cellar price: R250 a bottle.

Score: 90/100.
