World champ.

Paul Cluver Sauvignon Blanc 2013 recently won the Decanter World Wine Awards international trophy for Sauvignon Blanc under £15, and in another case of gongs leading to sales, I picked up a bottle from Liquor City Claremont (R84.90 a bottle).

Just how good is it? There’s some gun-smoke (mild reduction) on the nose while the palate is pleasantly lean and austere with flavours of lime, pear and white peach. Not overtly green, well balanced, the finish long and pithy. Skilfully assembled as you’d expect from this cellar, not exactly riveting but if the award helps to get an international audience to appreciate that we’re capable of Sauvignon as good as the Kiwis, then happy days.

Score: 88/100.
